Puritas Metal Products Counts on Toyoda to Deliver High-Quality Products for US Military Cargo and Transport

Apr 27, 2020

“All in all, we are very pleased with the purchase of these machines. With the cost of manufacturing rising from materials, healthcare, and labor, we are still able to sustain low costs for our customers because of our investment in high-performance machinery. We take great pride in what we do—and with the help of Toyoda, we know we can deliver the best possible products for our military.”

With over 60 years of experience, Puritas Metal Products has earned their place as the leading manufacturer of high quality lifting rings and plate nuts for demanding cargo handling and storage applications. From the raw materials to the finishing—Puritas products are held to the highest standards to ensure safety for military transport and personnel. Their process for part production included a machine that was capable but lacking inefficiency in terms of time and tooling. Puritas needed a machine that could produce a complete, high-quality part in a shorter amount of time. They knew exactly what they were looking for and refused to settle for less.

Their goals were simple. Update the existing equipment to increase efficiencies across the board, bring down manufacturing costs while maintaining high-quality standards, and ensure support for staff through the transition to the upgraded technology. With these guidelines in mind, Puritas General Manager Todd Whitney visited the Toyoda booth at an industry tradeshow to see if the NEX-105 would fit the bill.

“I knew exactly what we needed to produce our parts efficiently—and after seeing the construction of the turret, guideways, and live tool system I was interested,” said Whitney.

The NEX-105 is built for high-speed production of small complex components—and would provide much-needed breathing room to put stock parts on the shelves. Equipped with the latest generation rigid guides, the NEX-105 provides sustained accuracy and greater metal removal alongside rapid traverse rates—reducing non-cutting time and upping overall productivity. In addition to the NEX-105, Puritas added the NEX-108 to the arsenal. The NEX-108 delivers maximum production and flexibility for high-torque, high-speed turning and milling applications. With a maximum spindle speed of 4,000 RPM and fast indexing capabilities, it would increase output without sacrificing accuracy.

Post-installation, Puritas’ production increased by nearly 40%. Cycle times were reduced by an average of 30% across three different parts, and non-perishable tooling was reduced by 70%. “The work holding of the new machines brought down tooling costs significantly and eliminated the need for perishable tools from the shop,” said Whitney. The NEX-108 streamlined Puritas’ process by eliminating the need for two other machines and the small footprint meant more floor space and better workflow. “Being able to control everything in one operation has allowed us to reduce scrap by 10%,” Whitney continued.
