Toyoda Machinery USA began as Toyoda Automatic Loom Works, a textile and machine tool facility for the Toyota Motor Company. The design and manufacturing at this plant was transferred to Toyoda Machine Works, Ltd. in 1941.×
The Power Unit Type B was a machine tool drive unit for special purposes, and it consisted of an electric spindle motor and a hydraulic feed system.×
Toyoda developed its first cylindrical grinding machine with French technology. This machine featured a hydrostatic wheel spindle bearing, multi-step feed by sub-slideway, and a straight-radius continuous wheel dresser.×
After refining technology from 1968, Toyoda introduced its first horizontal machining center to market. Among other improvements, the follow-up models included advanced capabilities to limit thermal expansion, a 2-pallet system, and automatic tool changer and touch sensor.×
The first automation system was installed in Japan for power steering systems, which later led to Toyoda's flexible manufacturing systems with pallet storage systems and rail-guided vehicles.×
Toyoda introduced its first vertical machining center that had an automatic tool changer and electronic control in 1978. This machine featured Toyoda's touch sensor function and was the first to adopt a moveable control panel.×
Toyoda was awarded the Deming Application Prize for its contribution to quality control and business management systems in Japan.×
Toyoda developed its first TOP center for use in CNC transfer lines. Newer TOP center models would have smaller footprints and greater CNC flexibility.×
In 1987, Toyoda Machinery USA (TMU) established its Standard Products Division in Illinois, and acquired Grinders for Industry, Inc. TMU turned the Michigan-based grinding facility into a division machine remanufacturing, and has since opened sales and service offices in Mexico, Minnesota, and Massachusetts.×
Toyoda Machinery USA became a part of JTEKT Corporation in 2006, and in the same year, partnered with WELE to exclusively sell and support WELE's product lineup of vertical machining centers, double column machining centers, adjustable cross rail machines, gantry mills, boring mills, and vertical turning centers.×
